HORSES FOR A CHANGE - An Equine-Facilitated Mental Health Program

Frog Hollow Farm's "Horses for a Change" is an equine facilitated therapeutic riding program that uses horseback riding and horse care to develop life skills. Founded in 1996 with a core of volunteers, we have been serving children and adults, individuals and groups in the Hudson Valley.

Learning to ride and to care for horses fosters independence, inspires trust, and enhances cooperation and self-control. The formation of the relationship with a horse leads to increased confidence and self-esteem. Riding improves balance and coordination and can help achieve realistic body image, develop communication skills, insight and judgment. Clients take pride in mastering new skills while enjoying a special bond with a non-judgmental animal.

Clinical research suggests that therapeutic riding can help treat learning disabilities, depression, attention deficit disorder, autism, brain injury and substance abuse.

Skills gained can translate to other areas of life such as home, school and work. Horse mastery leads to life mastery.

Licensed mental health professionals who also have extensive experience with horses and the instruction of riding conduct sessions. They develop the treatment plan, maintain records and continually assess each individual's strengths and needs to maximize opportunities for success. Sessions are arranged by appointment with our intake worker.
